Summer Language Institute experiences extend beyond classroom

Students in the University of North Georgia's (UNG) Summer Language Institute (SLI) gained experience far beyond the classroom this summer. As part of the intensive six-week course from June 15-July 31 that earned them eight credit hours in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Russian, students took field trips to put their language skills into practice.

University of North Georgia announces President's Lists

University of North Georgia (UNG) President Bonita C. Jacobs recognized students who achieved a 4.0 GPA during the summer 2019 semester. Students enrolled in 12 or more credit hours in bachelor's degree programs who achieved a 4.0 grade point average were named to the President's Honor Roll. Students enrolled in associate degree programs who met the same level of achievement were named to the President's List.

The deans of each of UNG's five colleges - the College of Arts & Letters, the College of Education, the College of Health Sciences & Professions, the Mike Cottrell College of Business, and the College of Science & Mathematics - announced the names of those students who made their respective lists for summer 2019. Dean's List recognition is achieved by having at least a 3.5 grade point average, carrying 12 or more credit hours in one semester and having no grade lower than B.

Research grants fund summer projects by faculty and students

The University of North Georgia's Faculty Undergraduate Summer Engagement (FUSE) grants are funding research projects in 2019, but they are not the only ones. For the first time, four faculty members of psychological science received the American Psychological Association's Summer Undergraduat Psychology Research Experience (SUPRE) grants. SUPRE and FUSE grants allocate funds for UNG faculty to conduct research with undergraduate students who have little to no research experience.

Students to study abroad through Gilman scholarships

Nine UNG students have been awarded the Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship. The students learned in late April that they received the nationally competitive scholarship for summer 2019. Earlier this year, six UNG students earned early summer Gilman scholarships for a total of 15 UNG students, which is a new record for UNG.

Record number of students attend research conference

The University of North Georgia (UNG) had a record 65 current and former students attend the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) from April 11-13 at Kennesaw State University. UNG sent 77 people to NCUR, which ranked UNG as the No. 7 school for participants at the conference. Participants included students and faculty in anthropology and archaeology, biology, chemistry, computer science, education, history, music, physics, and psychology.

Rifle student-athlete in top 25 nationally in two Junior Olympics events

Three University of North Georgia (UNG) rifle team student-athletes competed in April at the National Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Sophomore Ricky Medina from Kennesaw, Georgia, finished 23rd out of 172 in the men's 10-meter air rifle event with a score of 1,217.9 and 24th out of 61 in the men's meter three-position rifle with a 2,259.

UNG senior is Fulbright Austria alternate

University of North Georgia (UNG) senior Kelly Reid has been selected as an alternate in the U.S. English Language Teaching Assistantship Program with the Fulbright Austria program. This means Reid has a chance of being offered a position by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research for the 2019-20 academic year if additional assistantship positions become available. In previous years, a considerable number of positions opened up for alternate candidates before the program's July start.

University of North Georgia (UNG) student Haley Shea Barfield has won the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, which recognizes the United States' most promising young scientists and future researchers. With this victory, she became UNG's first Barry Goldwater Scholar.

Two UNG students earn Boren scholarships

Alexander Ross, a senior cadet at UNG, wants to serve his country as an interpreter. UNG junior Laine Hunt dreams of being a foreign service officer with the U.S. State Department. Both will have an opportunity to pursue these goals after they spend months overseas learning Arabic and Russian thanks to David L. Boren Scholarships, which they both won in April 2019.

Awards and memories shared highlight Alumni Weekend

The University of North Georgia (UNG) Alumni Association Awards Luncheon was the one of the main events Saturday, April 27 during Alumni Weekend 2019. The following were recognized for outstanding leadership, service and excellence in their roles serving or attending the university: Dot Strother Alumni Scholarship: Kiersten Wilson. A junior pursuing a marketing degree, Wilson has studied abroad in Rome. She is in Phi Mu Fraternity, Order of Omega and the Mike Cottrell College of Business Dean's Student Advisory Board. She is president of UNG's American Marketing Association and serves as a Student Ambassador. Paul M. Hutcherson Outstanding Students: Cadet Col. Tyler Farney and Jasmine Bouges. Farney is a Distinguished Military Graduate who commissioned into the Army Aviation Branch on May 3. Farney has also been involved with Student Government Association and Nighthawks Entertainment. Bouges is president of Women in STEM, secretary of Mike Cottrell Scholars and is a member of the Honors Program. A computer science major, Bouges is set for a software development internship at Country Financial this summer.

University of North Georgia junior Adriana Zarate has been named a Newman Civic Fellow. She is one of 262 students named to the 2019-2020 cohort. The one-year experience emphasizes personal, professional and civic growth for students who have demonstrated a capacity for leadership and an investment in solving public problems.

Four UNG students named Critical Language Scholarship finalists; four named alternates

Four University of North Georgia students: Daniel Shearer, Josh Shepherd, Donnie "Jamar" Shumaker, and Rachel Wilson, were glad to learn March 1 that they were selected as Critical Language Scholarship finalists. The scholarship program is a fully-funded overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. Its goal is to broaden the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries. Four other semifinalists, Daniel Barker, Hannah Chisholm, Leah James, and Julia "Rhiannon" Smith, were named alternates. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, CLS is highly competitive, with acceptance rates of 10 percent, said Dr. Victoria Hightower, UNG's assistant director of Nationally Competitive Scholarships. This makes UNG's accomplishment of four finalists and four alternates significant.

Nearly 130 University of North Georgia (UNG) students performed research-based projects and presented their results during the poster sessions March 22 at the 24th Annual Research Conference (ARC) in the Convocation Center on UNG's Dahlonega Campus. Other students participated in panel discussions on topics such as educational experiences and musical research.
