With more than 18,000 students, the University of North Georgia is the state’s sixth-largest public university. UNG wins PBC women's basketball tournament championship

The University of North Georgia (UNG) women's basketball team earned the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) tournament championship March 9. Later that night, the Nighthawks were announced as the No. 1 seed and host of the eight-team NCAA Division II Southeast Regional from March 14-17 at the Convocation Center in Dahlonega, Georgia.

Mills, Garnett earn NCAA DII scholarship

The University of North Georgia (UNG) had a pair of student-athletes named as winners of the NCAA Division II 50th Anniversary Scholarship on May 20 at the NCAA Division II Spring Festival's Opening Ceremony in Orlando, Florida. UNG sophomore Max Garnett and senior Claire Mills were the two selected recipients from the Peach Belt Conference (PBC).

UNG men's basketball team wins NCAA Southeast Regional

The University of North Georgia (UNG) men's basketball team is taking its pursuit of a national title to another level. Thanks to a 70-67 victory against Lander University in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional championship game March 19, the Nighthawks are headed to the eight-team NCAA championship, which starts March 26 in Evansville, Indiana.

Softball players honored for national title

Before beginning a new season, the University of North Georgia (UNG) softball program had a high-profile chance to celebrate its 2023 NCAA Division II national championship. Twenty-three players and the team's coaches visited the Georgia Capitol on Jan. 30, receiving a commendation from Gov. Brian Kemp and first lady Marty Kemp and Senate and House resolutions honoring the team's national title. The team also presented Kemp, state Sen. Steve Gooch and state Rep. Will Wade with personalized UNG jerseys. Gooch, the Senate majority leader, and Wade are UNG alumni.

Basketball player named to NCAA committee on diversity and equity

University of North Georgia (UNG) men's basketball player Zach Brown has been named as one of four additions to the NCAA Committee to Promote Cultural Diversity and Equity. Brown, a redshirt junior from Princeton, New Jersey, pursuing a degree in marketing with a concentration in digital marketing, joins the committee that reviews, endorses and makes recommendations regarding diversity and inclusion matters.

Rifle student-athlete in top 25 nationally in two Junior Olympics events

Three University of North Georgia (UNG) rifle team student-athletes competed in April at the National Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Sophomore Ricky Medina from Kennesaw, Georgia, finished 23rd out of 172 in the men's 10-meter air rifle event with a score of 1,217.9 and 24th out of 61 in the men's meter three-position rifle with a 2,259.

The University of North Georgia (UNG) claimed the 2017 Southern Conference (SoCon) Rifle Championship on March 5 in Charleston, South Carolina, the first time a conference champion has been crowned since 1985.

Augusta native starts on new degree in extra season of golf at UNG

Martinez, Georgia, native Megan Sabol is one of four University of North Georgia (UNG) student-athletes who will use their extended eligibility to pursue additional degrees at the university. The opportunity arose when the NCAA offered seniors in spring sports a chance to extend their careers after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down their seasons in March 2020.
