Senior cadet wins Armed Forces scholarship

University of North Georgia (UNG) senior cadet Chandler Harris won the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Atlanta chapter's 2021 merit scholarship, which is for $1,500. The Dallas, Georgia, native pursuing a degree in cybersecurity is the president and founder of UNG's AFCEA chapter.

Ryan T. Brownlee Receives ODK Scholarship to Attend Medical School

Ryan T. Brownlee, a resident of Flowery Branch, Ga., recently received a $1,000 scholarship from Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) to attend medical school. Brownlee is an initiate of the Mercer University Circle of ODK. He spent summer 2021 researching the toxicity of mercury-cyanide complexes on zebrafish adult and embryo viability. In addition to his membership in Omicron Delta Kappa, Brownlee is an initiate of Alpha Epsilon Delta and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. He has also volunteered for MerServe, a student-run service leadership board for the Macon undergraduate campus of Mercer University, and at a local homeless shelter. Aside from being recognized by OK, Brownlee was also awarded the Foothills A.H.E.C. Intensive Program Graduate Scholarship for 2021. He plans to attend an M.D. or combined M.D./Ph.D. program with the goal of becoming a primary care physician.

Freshman and junior win Fund for Education Abroad scholarships

UNG students Ketsia Malala and Robbie Griffin won the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) scholarships this spring. FEA awarded 91 flexible scholarships to students of color and first-generation college and community college students from across the nation. Griffin and Malala were the only two students from a public or private school in Georgia to receive scholarships.

Seven from UNG selected for Fulbright awards

Five 2021 University of North Georgia (UNG) graduates plus two 2019 alumnae will see their dreams come true this year. All seven were selected as finalists for the U.S. Fulbright Program for the 2021-22 academic year. The highly competitive and prestigious program enables graduates to pursue research activities, become English Teaching Assistants, or enroll in graduate school.

Six students win coveted Boren scholarships

Six UNG students won the Boren award in spring 2021. The Boren Scholarship and Fellowship provide up to $25,000 for students to intensively study language and culture abroad. Five students earned the scholarship while one received the fellowship.

Two UNG Ed.D. students win Louise McBee Scholarship

Brooklyn Herrera and Ashlee Pollard, both pursuing the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in higher education leadership and practice at the University of North Georgia (UNG), have each received a $1,000 Louise McBee Scholarship. They were the lone winners from 36 statewide applicants for the scholarship to support educational enrichment for women exhibiting leadership potential in a higher education field.

Eight students win Gilman international scholarships

Eight UNG students were awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The program enables students who are eligible for the Pell grant to study or intern abroad for at least three weeks and gain skills critical to national security and economic competitiveness.

Six UNG students selected as Critical Language Scholarship semifinalists

Six UNG students were selected as Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) semifinalists with two being first-time applicants and the other four repeat applicants. The CLS program funds American undergraduate and graduate students to complete intensive language study abroad in the summer.

Scholarship benefits students of Mexican descent

A new scholarship supported in part by the Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta will relieve some of the financial burden for seven University of North Georgia (UNG) students. The $8,000 grant is funded through the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) via the IME-BECAS Program; becas is the Spanish word for scholarships. UNG added another $8,000 in matching funds. Recipients, who must be of Mexican descent, will participate in a leadership program during the spring 2021 semester.

Eight students receive scholarships from Women of UNG

Eight UNG female students were awarded the Women's Educational Scholarship from the Women of UNG. Designated as a shared interest group of alumni, faculty, and staff, the Women of UNG gives scholarships of $1,000 each to eight women older than 25 pursuing undergraduate degrees.

Cadet wins Coast Guard Foundation scholarship

University of North Georgia (UNG) cadet Devin Krass has received a $2,000 scholarship from the Coast Guard Foundation. Krass was eligible for the nationwide scholarship because both of his parents have served in the Coast Guard. His four years of training guide dogs through The Seeing Eye nonprofit organization was part of what made Krass stand out when he applied for the scholarship. Krass was part of a Delaware chapter of New Jersey-based The Seeing Eye.

Two students win Freeman-ASIA scholarships

University of North Georgia students Zoe Rumbaugh and Phillip Ly were awarded the Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA), which provide scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Rumbaugh will use the scholarship to fund a study abroad to Taiwan. Ly will use the money for study abroad trips to Japan.

Master of Accountancy student Susan Harkins earns prestigious scholarship

Susan Harkins, a Master of Accountancy student at the University of North Georgia (UNG), has received a John L. Carey Scholarship from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Up to five Carey scholarships are awarded each year. The $5,000 award aims "to encourage students with little or no previous accounting education" to pursue such careers. Harkins, who previously worked as an educator, began taking undergraduate accounting classes at UNG in fall 2018 to meet prerequisites for the accounting master's program.

Students to study abroad through Gilman scholarships

Nine UNG students have been awarded the Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship. The students learned in late April that they received the nationally competitive scholarship for summer 2019. Earlier this year, six UNG students earned early summer Gilman scholarships for a total of 15 UNG students, which is a new record for UNG.

UNG senior is Fulbright Austria alternate

University of North Georgia (UNG) senior Kelly Reid has been selected as an alternate in the U.S. English Language Teaching Assistantship Program with the Fulbright Austria program. This means Reid has a chance of being offered a position by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research for the 2019-20 academic year if additional assistantship positions become available. In previous years, a considerable number of positions opened up for alternate candidates before the program's July start.

University of North Georgia (UNG) student Haley Shea Barfield has won the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, which recognizes the United States' most promising young scientists and future researchers. With this victory, she became UNG's first Barry Goldwater Scholar.

Two UNG students earn Boren scholarships

Alexander Ross, a senior cadet at UNG, wants to serve his country as an interpreter. UNG junior Laine Hunt dreams of being a foreign service officer with the U.S. State Department. Both will have an opportunity to pursue these goals after they spend months overseas learning Arabic and Russian thanks to David L. Boren Scholarships, which they both won in April 2019.

Six University of North Georgia (UNG) students learned in December they were Early Summer awardees of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and implemented by the Institute of International Education, the Gilman program offers scholarships of up to $5,000 to outstanding U.S. undergraduate Pell grant recipients. Students studying a critical need language could be eligible to receive a scholarship of up to $8,000.
