Michael Garrett receives poultry science scholarship

Michael Garrett of Dawsonville, Georgia was awarded the first-ever Outstanding Poultry Science Student award at the University of North Georgia (UNG), which comes with a scholarship. Garrett is pursuing an associate degree in science with a concentration in poultry science.

The scholarships are a product of donations from Pilgrim's Pride Corp., Fieldale Farms, Columbia Farms and CWT Farms International's local poultry industries.

"These scholarship funds are from local area companies who want to invest in UNG students who could possibly be their workforce of tomorrow," said Linda Purvis, who is a biology and poultry science instructor. "The scholarships will enable us to help students who are passionate about the poultry industry but who otherwise may not have the financial means to attend college and connect to the local poultry industry."

The Outstanding Poultry Science Freshman scholarship will award $500 to one student each spring. The scholarship requires the student to have completed 25 hours at UNG, declare a poultry science major and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

The Outstanding Poultry Science Student scholarship will award $1,000 to a student annually in spring. The scholarship requires the student to be on track to graduate within a year from when the scholarship is received, to have completed POUL 2020 with a B or higher and have a minimum GPA of 2.8.

UNG offers courses in poultry sciences and students can earn an Associate of Science with a focus in poultry science in either a science or business track. Students earning the two-year degree may transfer into a four-year program at another institution to pursue a bachelor's degree.
